Dance and music are strongly connected in Ethiopia. In the western world, we think of them as two separate things but for Ethiopians, they are the same thing. Traditional dances and songs have the people own unique rhythm.

A hypnotic mix of musical styles, Ethio-jazz has a fascinating history and is enjoying a comeback at venues across the city – A fusion of the eerie rhythms of ancient Ethiopian tribal music with the soulful undertones of jazz and the funky bounce of Afrobeat, Ethio-jazz had its heyday in the 1950s and 60s but in recent years has been making a slow but unmistakable comeback in the country’s capital.

• Each of the Ethiopian traditional dances has unique body movements and steps and some ethnic groups use costumes. Some ethnic groups tend to primarily use the upper body when dancing while other types of dance involve the lower body as well. An example of the former is Eskesta, a form of Ethiopian dance that involves a lot of shoulder movement. Dine at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant to experience the exotic food culture of Ethiopia
